Why did you choose Psychiatry as your chosen specialty?
I had an interest in dementias from my medical school days, mainly because I saw my grandfather developing the illness and it getting progressively worse as time went by. I found it curious that we did not (and still do not!) know exactly how and why someone develops a dementia. I was also attracted to Psychiatry due to the work-life balance it offers, as well as dedicated time to pursue my research interests.
What advice would you give to a trainee thinking about a career in Psychiatry?
Enjoy the journey! It does take a while to finish the journey as a trainee, and hence it is very important to learn and enjoy each of your placements. Your placements and workplace expectations are varied and there is always something new to learn each day! Also, communication is the key in Psychiatry – on all levels such as with patients, carers, colleagues, peers and external voluntary agencies.
Why do you think trainees should choose the North West London Training Programme?
As a trainee who actually trained on the NWL training programme, I enjoyed the different job types and sub-specialties that were on offer as part of the Programme. The trainers were all wonderful and supportive, and I got to make and build excellent relationships with each of my trainers and colleagues. I was also impressed by the support provided by the scheme for all types of trainees, including less-than full-time and trainees returning to work.
What are the best aspects of being a trainer?
Building, nurturing and mentoring young minds, and to help them reach (and sometimes exceed) their potential. Being a trainer gives us this opportunity which I am grateful for and enjoy doing.
