Supported Return to Training

At any given time around 10% of postgraduate doctors are out of training for a variety of reasons such as parental leave, ill health and research. It is now recognised that time out of practice can impact on a clinician’s competence, technical skills & confidence. Targeted support can help doctors to get back “up to speed” when they return to training.

The Supported Return to Training (SuppoRTT) Programme is a structured and systematic process for planned exit and re-entry to training and maintaining contact while on leave. It is part of a national, funded HEE programme to support all trainees to return to training safely and confidently after a period of absence.

Trainees who have taken time out of training are a diverse group so an individualised approach is needed which can include:

  • Opportunities to discuss any issues around taking time out of training- before, during and after leave

  • Shadowing arrangements including for out of hours work

  • Refresher courses

  • Coaching, mentoring and networking

  • Keeping in touch events

Up to £1000 per week of funding to a maximum of £3000 (or 3 weeks) is available for all returning trainees.
