Dr Mostafa Shalaby

I am currently a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist in West London NHS Trust. I grew up between the UK and Egypt and  studied medicine in Alexandria university in Egypt.

I did my Foundation years in the West Midlands then joined the North West London Core Training Programme in 2016 as a core trainee and continued my higher training in the same region.

Why did you choose to train in North West London?

I chose to work in North West London as while I was doing my foundation years in the West Midlands I found myself coming to London on most weekends and during my AL. The location is great as the population is diverse, which means there are loads of different things to do, food to eat and there is always events to attend. In addition to this , Heathrow airport is close which means it is easy to travel at anytime!

I continued my Higher Training in CNWL because I have found the staff to be very friendly and consultants are always approachable which always helps me to work at ease. In addition to this  the Familiarity of knowing staff is great  as I get to see my colleagues progress into consultants, matrons, team managers etc. Finally the ambition of the trust to succeed inside the UK and get recognized globally is in line with my ambitions.

What have been the best aspects of your training experience?

I have been lucky enough to do the Leadership and Management fellowship scheme with the Royal college which was funded by the trust

I also did a QI coaching 6 month course.

Having a special interest a day a week and also having an hour supervision a week is a luxury in psychiatry.

Why was Psychiatry your chosen specialty?

Growing up in the Middle East, I witnessed first hand the stigma surrounding psychiatry and mental health awareness. This was a leading cause in my decision to pursue this speciality in hopes of breaking this stigma and normalising mental health treatment.

I have a curious personality and believe I have good communication skills which are key towards being a good psychiatrist.

What would your advice be to new trainees to get the most out of their training experience?

  1. Start your MRCPSYCH exams as soon as you can.

  2. Work and exams can be stressful, so prioritise your mental health well being.

  3. Looking back now, these were the best years of my life. So enjoy this amazing journey!
