Dr Parvinder Shergill

Hi, I am Parvinder, I am a Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry at CNWL. I am from West London, and went to university for Medicine and BSc Philosophy at Kings, did my Foundation in Cambridge, and my core training/higher training with CNWL/West London NHS Trust

Why did you choose to train in North West London?

I did my Core training in North West London and therefore I wanted to continue my higher training also in the same deanery. I enjoy working in North West London, and so for me it made sense to continue my training in an interesting diverse part of London.

What have been the best aspects of your training experience?

I thoroughly enjoy learning and researching psychiatry, It is an unusual and unique speciality that I feel no other specialty can compare to. It is a combination of a various parts of medicine, and so it constantly keeps you on your toes. There is a lot we still are learning about psychiatry. I enjoy the exploration of different therapies such as psychotherapy and ECT. I also feel there is room and breadth to explore ones creative side in psychiatry, more so than any other field, such as drama therapy or art therapy. No day is the same in this field, and mental health affects everybody, and has never been more pivotal to work within than now in the pandemic.

Why was Psychiatry your chosen specialty?

There are a variety of sub specialities to explore in the deanery which is quite exciting. I also feel I have been able to be innovative in my training in having directed a mental health documentary in the trust.

What would your advice be to new trainees to get the most out of their training experience?

I think the more you put in the more you will get. There are a lot of opportunities if you want to explore them. There is also breadth to make changes in the training and put your own flare in the training. There is room to be an individual in the training programme and have your voice heard.
